ALAMEDA (KRON) -- Restorers are going back to work on a 1957 Douglas A4 Skyhawk that was badly damaged when a crane fell on it at the former Alameda Naval Air Station.

Severe winds damaged the plane in 2008.  It had been on display at the base since 1969.

Mark Baird, one of the restorers involved in the project, tells KRON 4's Daniel Villareal, it appears the ground was too soft and wet when crews tried to replace the repaired plane.  In the video you can see the plane fall to the side and then the crane falls onto the aircraft.

Baird says this situation can be fixed.  He estimates it will take about a year to fix the very severe damage and try again to put the bomber back in place.

The restorer calls the accident "unbelievable and devastating."
