OAKLAND (KRON) -- Oakland police homicide investigators are spending the first day of the new year looking for the man who opened fire at a taco truck Friday night ending the life of a five year old boy.

Gabriel Martinez Jr. is the 103rd person killed in Oakland in 2011.

Investigators say the victim's family operates a taco truck that was open for business at 55th and International Blvd.  The killer ordered some food witnesses say and while he was waiting for his taco he opened fire.  Gabriel was struck and died later at the hospital.

Authorities say it's unclear who the target of the shooting might be.  The killer then ran away with a woman and remains on the loose.

"It's a sad day in Oakland when you have three toddlers that were killed in one year," Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said at a service noting the violent deaths of several children in the city over the past year.  Baby Hiram Lawrence and Carlos Nava were also killed in gun crime in Oakland in 2011.

"We really have to have not just more police in these neighborhoods, we have to have more resources in these neighborhoods to try to break the cycle of violence,"  Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said.

If you know anything about the man who killed Gabriel, contact Oakland police or your local authorities.
