SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)--A 63-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing another man at a homeless shelter in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood on Monday evening, police said today.
Investigators have identified Ricky Leon Scott, a San Francisco resident, as a suspect in the stabbing, which was reported at 6:58 p.m. Monday.
Officers responded to the St. Vincent de Paul Society's homeless shelter at 525 Fifth St., near Bryant Street, where they found a 44-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to his torso.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.
The stabber fled before officers had arrived, but about 10 minutes later, a police sergeant detained someone matching his description a block away, at Fourth and Bryant streets, police said.
Witnesses subsequently identified the suspect, Scott, as the stabber and he was taken into custody on suspicion of murder, according to police.
No one at the homeless shelter was willing to comment on the stabbing this afternoon. An employee at the shelter referred inquiries to Pamela Tebo, of the San Francisco Human Services Agency, and Tebo was not immediately available for comment.
The homicide, San Francisco's fourth of 2012, remains under investigation.
Anyone with additional information about the case is encouraged to call police Sgt. Scott Warnke from the department's homicide detail at (415) 553-1145 or the police operations center after hours at (415) 553-1071.
