SAN JOSE (KRON) -- A resident of an apartment building that went up in flames is in the hospital with second-degree burns, said a San Jose Fire captain.

Firefighters responded to an eight-unit structure at 2782 Villa Monterey after reports of a fire came in at 2:57 a.m. on Tuesday, said San Jose fire Captain Rob Brown.  When they arrived on scene they found an upstairs unit fully engulfed in flames, with fire shooting out the windows and attic, Brown said.

Two people were reportedly trapped by the fire and may have self-evacuated by jumping from an upstairs window, Brown said.
At 3:11 a.m. firefighters upgraded the blaze to a two-alarm and were able to knock down flames by 3:23 a.m.
KRON 4'S Will Tran reports from the scene that firefighters evacuated five units and suspect that at least three of the units are not livable.
The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire to arrange shelter, according to fire officials.
