SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- There's angry reaction among some members of San Francisco's Mission District community after police shot and wounded a suspected gang member.

Authorities say a member of the department's gang task force and probation officers were patrolling along 14th street between South Van Ness and Mission when they encountered two suspected gang members.  One of the suspect's ran away police say and the officer chased him.  Authorities say it appears the suspect was armed with a TEC-9 machine pistol.

"During that foot pursuit, one suspect pulled a weapon," San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak says.  "We're not sure exactly where he had it on his person but he produced a weapon and turned towards the officer.  At that time the officer ordered the suspect to drop the weapon.  The suspect began to raise the weapon towards the officer's direction.  The officer fired two shots fearing for his life.  The suspect was struck by gunfire.  He was subsequently transported to San Francisco General Hospital and at this point is condition is described as non-life threatening."

KRON 4's Reggie Kumar reports a crowd of nearly 100 people gathered in the area after the shooting.  Many shouted obscenities at the police and a few appeared to vandalize businesses in the Mission District and appeared to be targeting the Mission Street Police Station.

There are no confirmed reports of injuries in connection with the civil unrest following the shooting.
