LITTLETON (BCN) -- A suspect is in custody after a Novato area woman was fatally stabbed Monday at a New Hampshire hotel where she was staying while visiting her alma mater.

Dr. Catherine "Kitty" Houghton, 70, was killed around 8:50 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in Littleton, N.H., the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said.

Rodney Hill, 37, of West Danville, Vt. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, the attorney general's office said.

Houghton was found inside the hotel suffering from multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso, the attorney general's office said. She was taken to Littleton Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Houghton, a retired U.S. Foreign Service commercial counselor, was visiting the White Mountain School in Bethlehem, N.H. where she graduated in 1960. She returned to the school as a member of the board of trustees in 2010, and was the school's commencement speaker in 2011, the school said on it's website.

"She will long be remembered for her kindness, keen intellect and adventurous spirit. She lived life to the fullest, pursuing each next step with curiosity and joy. Through her words, actions and deeds she has inspired countless others to do the same," school officials said.

Houghton was the secretary of the Indian Valley Associates, an elected body that advises Marin County on community issues in the rural area of ranches and farms west Novato.
