OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A man confined to a state psychiatric hospital after a hit-and-run rampage on the streets of San Francisco has been indicted on a murder charge in Alameda County.

Prosecutors say an indictment charging Omeed Aziz Popal with murder in the death of a Fremont pedestrian was issued by a grand jury Friday.

Popal was arrested and charged after prosecutors say he ran down 16 people with his SUV in San Francisco in August of 2006.

After a judge ruled he was insane at the time of the San Francisco attacks, Popal was placed in Napa State Hospital.

Popal allegedly began his rampage when he used his SUV to hit and kill a 54-year-old man as he walked down a street in Fremont.

Alameda County prosecutors say they hope to be able set an arraignment date on the murder charge for next month in Oakland.
