SANTA ROSA (BCN) -- Ten people were arrested for driving without or on a suspended driver’s license during a sting operation outside the Sonoma County courthouse in Santa Rosa on Thursday. Petaluma police Sgt. Ken Savano said undercover officers from the “Avoid the 13" campaign followed two dozen offenders out of the courtrooms. The campaign targets habitual DUI offenders and suspended and unlicensed drivers. The sting operation targeted drivers who were cited to appear in court Thursday for violations over the Memorial Day weekend. Most of the offenders walked to a bus stop, called someone for a ride or had a driver with them, said Savano. Those who chose to drive were stopped by motorcycle officers waiting for them north and south of the courthouse. Six people were arrested for driving on a suspended license. Five of them had their licenses suspended because of a prior DUI offense. The remaining four drivers were arrested for driving without a license and one driver had outstanding misdemeanor warrants. Ten vehicles were towed and nine were impounded for 30 days. The Avoid the 13 campaign periodically conducts the courthouse sting operation. (Copyright 2009, Bay City News, All rights reserved.)
