SAN RAFAEL (BCN) -- A San Rafael man convicted of four felony counts in connection with the rape of a woman at a Stinson Beach campsite nearly four years ago will be sentenced Aug. 5 in Marin County Superior Court.

Marin County Deputy District Attorney Aicha Mievis said Terry Ray Hawes, 46, faces 15 years in prison for rape with a foreign object, attempted forcible rape, criminal threats and assault with intent to commit rape.

Hawes was convicted by a jury Friday. Mievis said the jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction on a second count of rape with a foreign object.

Mievis said the female hiker, who was 28 at the time of the Aug.  13, 2005 incident, had a conversation with Hawes outside a market in Stinson Beach and then went on her way. She said Hawes followed her to her campsite and assaulted her twice. She flagged down a motorist the next day.

Police agencies along the North Coast searched for Hawes, a drifter, and he was arrested at a Santa Cruz homeless shelter in August 2005.

A tattoo of an outline of a marijuana leaf on Hawes' upper back led authorities to identify Hawes as the rape suspect.

The case was suspended twice when Hawes was found incompetent to stand trial. He spent time in Atascadero State Hospital for treatment of schizophrenia until he was determined to be competent. He was tried before Judge Kelly Simmons.
