Created by Brian Shields on 7/9/2009 9:24:00 AM

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A group that works on reducing the number of homeless people in Alameda County says the homeless population in the county dropped by 10 percent since 2007.

The nonprofit group Everyone Home is crediting the increased availability of affordable housing and other efforts with reducing homelessness in Alameda County.

In its latest count conducted in January and released Wednesday, the group says the decline in the number of homeless people brought the county's total homeless population down to 4,341.

Berkeley showed the biggest decline in the county, with the group saying that the chronic homeless population dropped by 48 percent.
