SANTA ROSA (BCN) -- A Windsor man who was allegedly caught using a credit card stolen from Santa Rosa City Councilwoman Veronica Jacobi on the Fourth of July has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges in Sonoma County Superior Court.
Filiberto Carillo, 35, pleaded innocent Wednesday to burglary, grand theft and being a member of a street gang. He is being held in the Sonoma County jail in lieu of $70,000 bail.
Court records show Carillo has two previous misdemeanor convictions for assault and battery and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
He also has two felony convictions on drug charges and for receiving stolen property, and has served two prison terms.
Santa Rosa police said two young males encountered Jacobi riding her bicycle on the Prince Memorial Greenway east of Pierson Street in Santa Rosa around 9 p.m. on July 4.
The suspects asked her for money and when she declined and kept riding, one of them pushed Jacobi, causing her to fall off her bike, police said. The suspects took several personal items from Jacobi who then ran home and called police, Sgt. Clay Van Artsdalen said.
Carillo was arrested the next day after he was stopped by a Sonoma County Sheriff's Department deputy for a traffic violation. He had one of Jacobi’s credit cards and was arrested for possession of stolen property, police said.
Police said Carillo was captured by a surveillance camera using the credit card at a Santa Rosa gas station and he was then arrested for burglary, fraudulent use of a credit card and being a street gang member.
Sgt. Lisa Banayat said police are still investigating whether Carillo was one of the two people who approached Jacobi that night, but said investigators are seeking at least one other suspect in the case.
Jacobi's silver Aruba mountain bike and other personal property are still missing, police said.
