Many Who Tried Alleged Kidnapper's "Magic Box" Insist It Didn't Work
Created by Brian Shields on 8/28/2009 7:35:00 PM

ANTIOCH (KRON) -- One of the more bizarre claims involving Phillip Garrido, the man accused of kidnapping and holding Jaycee Dugard for 18 years, is that he had invented a device that allowed him to control sounds with his mind.

KRON 4's Mark Jones talked with some of the people who tried out Garrido's contraption with mostly negative results.

Many said Garrido would hand them a bottle of water and then ask them to put on headphones connected to a box.

"They'd have headphones and he'd say can you hear me…and he would stop talking, and say 'Can you hear me over the headphone?'" Jim Malino told Mark.  "All kinds of people heard it. Looks like it worked to me. He had cards that said 'Voices are Us.'"

Most of the people who tried it out couldn't hear anything at all.  So one man said Garrido tried to help him out.

"He said 'Can you hear it?'" Jim Allen recalled.  " I was holding my earphones really carefully and listening and all I heard was the ocean.  Then he kind of started mouthing , very quietly mouthing words.  He said could you hear it and I said no….and so he'd mouth the words a little louder, can you hear it?  I can hear you….and he said that's it that's great you're hearing it. ..it works. This guy is nutty.  He's nutty…and I just wanted to get away from him at that point."

Another woman who reportedly signed a declaration saying she heard the voices suspected the real source.  Garrido apparently told her two years ago that he was schizophrenic and on medication but that he was thrilled because now he heard the voice of God."

Idiots
This just proves that police are idiots why is there so many of them if the're not doing their damn job i guess their too busy drinking starbucks instead of solving crimes!!!! As for the neighbors they should be ashamed of themselves too for not saying anything!!

NIMBY
Not in my backyard is the attitude of the neighbors. This crime should have been solved years ago, but people don't want to get involved. All the neighbors, police and law enforcers failed miserably. I guess the golden rule doesn't apply anymore.

This makes me very ill to think about. If you have seen strange things like this in your neighborhood, suspected children are being made to live in a backyard, for Gods sake, report it, don't come out of the woodwork now and say you suspected something, shame on all of you who chose to "turn the other cheek", shame on you.

People care for others more in the Midwest and South
People in CA don't care about others because they care only about themselves. I find it with customer service here. People can't be bothered to help others. You're lucky if people will ask you if they can help you but go out of their way to help you is not their way here. In the south, people bend over backwards to help others. People are to selfish here.

I agree with Alexis
how come the neighbors didn't know anything or report anything? I know they contacted the police once in 2006, but, if they saw people & kids living in tents for years, how come they wouldn't report that on a regular basis?..I think the neighbors are just as sick as the couple was...All my payers are with jaycee & her daughters. I have 3 young daughters of my own, 11,10 & 8. I don't know what I would do, or how I would feel if I was in Jaycee's mom's shoes..I would be greatful my daughter was alive, but I would hate to know that my daughter suffered for 18 years :-(

This proves that people really don't care
about other people. What happened to looking out for your neighbor? Not to mention the police. How could this have possibly gone so undetected? This story almost infuriates me.
