SF Board of Supervisors to Vote on Cat Declawing Ban
Created by Kimberlee Sakamoto on 10/27/2009 12:28:00 PM

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – It could soon be illegal to declaw your cat in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee approved legislation Monday that would ban cat declawing in the city. The full Board of Supervisors will vote on Tuesday November 3rd.

Declawing is illegal in 20 countries, including most of Europe, Brazil, Japan and Israel. In the United States, Norfolk, Va., and West Hollywood have such bans. Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Berkeley and Beverly Hills are considering similar legislation.

Opponents of declawing say it is painful surgery in which you take off the whole last bone of each of the front toes of a cat. They note that a cat’s claws are an integral part of the cat’s foot and are needed for balance, exercise and stretching.

Those who oppose the ban say the decision should be made by owners in consultation with their veterinarians.

You can always cut the cat's nail. Otherwise, your vet can put on Softpaw or cut the nails for you. Would you cut off your kid's finger tips because s/he scratch you? I want cats declawing to become illegal in SF and in the U.S. ASAP!!!

Declawing is inhumane
You can easily train a cat not to claw the furniture just like to train your dog or kid not to poop on the carpet.

Just moved in with my boyfriend and kitty and the kitty is angry because it can see other kitties out the window of our apartment. She has taken to attacking me or other females whenever there is a noise in the house she disapproves of. What is our alternative to getting her de-clawed?

It is totally unnecessary and cats CAN be trained not to scratch. I think that having a such a ban is not only ethical & humane, but practical. I only wish it were illegal throughout the U.S.
