Extra $18 Vehicle License Fee Suggested to Help State Parks Created by Kimberlee Sakamoto on 11/4/2009 1:06:00 PM
CALIFORNIA (KRON) – A coalition of environmental and nonprofit groups are hoping an increase in vehicle license fees will help keep California parks open and accessible to residents.
The new initiative, California State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund Act of 2010, would charge drivers an extra $18 to register their vehicles. In exchange, motorists would receive free admission to all state parks.
The extra money would help establish a State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund, in which only state parks operations and urban rivers, wildlife, open space and ocean conservation programs would benefit from the funds.
Twice in the past two years, state parks were on the brink of being shutdown. Only last minute budget reprieves kept them open. Budget cuts, however, will result in nearly 60 state parks shutting down part-time or having their hours of operations reduced.
"California state parks are in peril because of chronic underfunding," said Elizabeth Goldstein, President of the California State Parks Foundation in a statement. "Our state parks were once considered the best in the nation, and now they're falling apart and threatened with closure because they have no reliable source of funding. This parks measure would create a dedicated funding source to prevent park Proposed Ballot Measure Filed to Protect California State Parks & Conserve Wildlife closures, eliminate a backlog of more than a billion dollars in repairs and properly maintain parks and other natural resources for our children and grandchildren to enjoy."
Supporters of the measure are hoping to put the State Park Access Pass on the ballot for November 2010.

| Not all parks used to charge
|
|
| Does anyone remember when you could get into a park without ANY charge? I used to go to lakes in this state that were just a gravel road and a dirt boat ramp to use. They paved the road, made a concrete ramp, built a toll booth, now charge an entrance fee, AND a launch fee. What a scam. Several places in the woods were nothing more than a gravel road, (once again) with turn outs, small camp stoves, and a porta potty. Pave the roads, build a toll booth, and charge entrance fees. Where I used to stay all night, now I get kicked out at sunset. We just have to many "manned" public parks. Progress is turning back the clock. |

| No I will absolutely NOT support another tax to keep open services I cannot enjoy. I like to hike with my dogs. Dogs are NOT ALLOWED anywhere in state parks except parking lots. So we don't even bother with state parks. Or county parks. Or ANY parks for that matter. Why should I have to pay another 40 dollars a year in taxes (two vehicles, work and play) and get NOTHING in return. When dogs are allowed, I may reconsider. Everybody wants dogs to be so well behaved and socialized and yet they are given NO CHANCE to practice those skills.
I'm about three seconds away from declaring my own state and stop paying ALL taxes and fees and go completely "rogue".

| California already has absurdly high vehicle registration. They should be talking about reducing it not adding more burden to overtaxed Californians. |

| Bad Idea (but a great cause)
|
|
| Please write the coalition members that have supported this measure, and ask them to remove their support (feel free to copy and add or subtract your own reasons):
I strongly oppose this increase in vehicle registration fees, and urge other citizens not to sign any petitions to include this proposal on a ballot for the following reasons:
- This proposal is nothing more than a tax increase
- Vehicle registration fees have nothing to do with state parks
- This is a user fee that will require non-users to pay
- Any special tax that goes toward the parks will be followed by a reduction in general fund spending for the parks
- Our taxes are high enough in California, and we don't need any additional increases
- Our legislators need to keep parks open, but should not increase taxes
- Eliminate the waste in our state budget to pay for the parks

| Good idea with some changes
|
|
| I think this is a good idea, but they should charge the amount not per registered vehicle, but per person or household. If someone has more than 1 vehicle, they shouldn't have to pay per vehicle. |
