Idle Rail Cars Upsetting People in Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (AP) - The weak economy is creating some unanticipated troubles in suburban Contra Costa County.

Some people in Brentwood aren't very happy with Union Pacific Railroad parking its idle railcars on an unused line that runs through the city.

Railroad officials say they have to park the cars somewhere because reduced demand for rail transport has forced some of its cars to sit idle.

But city officials and residents say parking dozens of railcars near suburban developments is making neighborhoods look unattractive and blocking some views.

The Brentwood City Council last week agreed to send a letter to Union Pacific urging the company to move the cars to a more rural area.

Railroad officials say they store the idle cars where they won't interfere with its network of tracks.
