Hayward Police Say Murder Victims at Car Auction Site Were Stabbed to Death
Created by Kimberlee Sakamoto on 2/3/2010 5:27:00 PM

HAYWARD (BCN) -- Hayward police are reporting that the victims of a double homicide at  a car auction lot early Tuesday were stabbed to death.

Calling the incident at Manheim San Francisco Bay Auto Auction at  1901 Addison Way "a brutal double homicide," Capt. Darryl McAllister said  police have strong leads but no suspects have been arrested or questioned and  no motive has been confirmed.

Manheim San Francisco Bay, which previously was known as Bay  Cities Auto Auction, had initially said on Tuesday that robbery and theft may  have been the motive for the homicides. However, the business later retracted  that statement and McAllister said police "are still working to determine the  facts that led up to the stabbings."

He said, "We do not have a suspect description to publish, however  we are confident the leads we are working are bringing us closer to  identifying a suspect and providing additional information."

McAllister identified the victims as 63-year-old Angelito Erasquin  of Hayward, who had worked as a security guard at the business for eight  years, and 56-year-old James Wightman of Central Point, Ore. Both victims  suffered multiple stab wounds.

Wightman was a truck driver who routinely delivered automobiles to  the auction business, McAllister said.

He said police initially thought the incident was a hit-and-run  accident, as police dispatchers received a report at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday  that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian on Addison Way, outside the  car-auction lot.

Patrol officers who responded found Erasquin in the street.  Hayward Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Officers then found Wightman in the cab of an idling big-rig truck  parked near the entrance to the property, McAllister said. Wightman also was  pronounced dead at the scene.

McAllister said the auto auction business is a huge 73-acre  property, which houses more than 2,000 cars.

Investigators spent most of Tuesday searching the grounds for  suspects and evidence but no suspects were found as a result of the search,  McAllister said.

He said anyone with information about the case should call  Inspector Mike Woods, Inspector J.P. Guimaraes or any available inspector or  detective at the Crime Stoppers tip line at (510) 293-7197.

Car hauler in Cali

unfortunate
I am a car hauler that frequents the auction. This is not the first violent incident I have heard about at this auction. The auction needs to step up security for its customers and transporters. What happend was horrific and I hope they hang the scoundrels who did this. I will never go there at night again! Scary....
