Virgin America Among Airlines Cutting Fares
Created by Kimberlee Sakamoto on 1/6/2009 9:43:31 PM

BURLINGAME, Calif. (AP) - There are lots of bargains to be found if you're planning to fly somewhere.

The first few days of the new year have seen a wave of airfare sales across the airline industry.

It's not what the experts had expected in the aftermath of some deep cuts in capacity that took effect starting in September.

But with the drop in fuel prices, and the weak economy slowing demand for air travel, airlines are trying to lure people on board with lower fares.

Burlingame-based Virgin America announced a fare sale today for travel through June 10 to all of the cities the carrier serves. Nonstop one-way fares range from $59 for flights from San Francisco to Las Vegas, for example, to $139 from New York to Los Angeles.
