Family of Sandra Cantu Visits Growing Memorial Outside Home
Created by Kimberlee Sakamoto on 4/8/2009 5:04:31 PM

TRACY (KRON) – The uncle to murdered eight-year-old Tracy girl, Sandra Cantu, says police and the FBI are making progress and he’s confidence that results will be released soon.

On Wednesday, Sandra’s aunt Angie Chavez, uncle Joe Chavez and grandfather Jose Chavez visited the growing memorial right outside the mobile home park where Sandra was last seen the afternoon of March 27th.

Jose told KRON 4’s Maureen Kelly that he will remember his granddaughter as a happy child, “She touched the hearts of many people, always smiling. She was always willing to help people, go help clean cupboards or make cookies with people. She had a big heart, and that heart has been shattered by this act of violence.”

The grandfather took Sandra to school every morning and picked her up every afternoon. The day she went missing he says she left his car and said, “Bye grandpa.” He went to work and never saw her again.

While Jose says he hopes nobody else has to go through what the family is going through right now, Joe urges the killer to go to police, “Do the right thing, turn yourself in. You did it, turn yourself in.”

The uncle says this incident has tested his faith, “I’m Catholic, we’re supposed to forgive. But this, I cannot forgive. I’ll be going to confession a lot over this.”

Jose also expresses his fury at what happened to his granddaughter, “There’s anger, you better believe there’s anger. Somebody took away my little baby. It’s insane, there’s a monster out there. They need to be apprehended, they need to be put away.”

As for Sandra’s mother, Jose says she was taken to the hospital and had her blood pressure monitored. While she’s back at home now, he says she’s still recovering, “She’s distraught, she’s shaken, she’s lost her baby. Nobody should ever have to lose their baby.”

According to Jose, 97 homes have been searched and he hopes investigators are making progress, “They had a C140 Coast Guard aircraft out here last night. That gave us hope they’re finding something.”

The search for Sandra ended Monday, when farm workers draining an irrigation pond just two miles form the mobile home park notified authorities when a large black suitcase floated to the top. The large piece of rolling luggage was taken to an unknown location later that evening and opened. The body of the little girl was found in the suitcase. Police say she was found wearing the clothes she was last seen in – a pink “Hello Kitty” t-shirt and black leggings.

The coroner told KRON 4’s Dan Kerman on Tuesday that an autopsy would not be completed for four to six weeks.

I agree with Delta Jim, I just said the same thing. There would not be much left of this person. To Sandra's mom, just knowing that she is in a place where no one can ever hurt her may comfort you, and I deeply sorry for this. You're ALL IN MY heart forever.

Such a horrible trajedy. How can anyone hurt such a beautiful little angel? I have two young children of my own and I have been deeply affected and disgusted with this horrendous act. The death penalty will do no justice in this case becuase the killer will get to spend the rest of his life in prison when in fact he should be killed on the spot. Our judicial system does not work. How is it that you multiple offenders are let loose in our communities to repeat such crimes? I agree with her uncle I cannot and will never be able to forgive such a horrible act.

Bills, Laws, Alerts
We have an AMBER ALERT for missing children. We should now have a CANTU LAW for our kidnapped children. This is a horrific act of violence done to such an innocent, young, beautiful CHILD. What is this world comming to?

As I watched the news this evening, I can hear Joe Chavez saying that he wants the killer, he wants him real bad. Well Joe, You've got company, you've got the whole community with you. If we had the chance to catch the scumbag, I don't think there would be much left of him, or it, whatever it is. Tracy is a good community, Joe is right, we need to pluck this bad apple. As for the rest of the children in this country, we need to protect our children, a good start would be punishments that do not give any 2nd chance's people that commit crimes against children, so they can doit all over again, which most crimes against childern are by repeat offenders. We do not need scum like this in Tracy, or anywhere else in our country. This crime has touched me deeply, I date a lady that has a daughter just like Sandra, and if anything happened to her, I'd just lose it. God, I know Sandra is in the nicest playroom in heaven, she is a sweet little girl, I know you'll take good are of her. To Sandra's mother, and the Chavez family, stay strong for Sandra. God bless you all.
