The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reopened Tuesday just in time for the start of the work week after transit officials hastily announced that crews were able to make a crucial repair a day ahead of schedule. "Traffic seems to be flowing smoothly," California Department of Transportation spokesman Bart Ney said after the bridge reopened just before 7 a.m. "I think it's still a surprise."

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will not reopen in time for the Tuesday morning commute, leaving thousands of drivers to find alternate ways to get into the city and setting the stage for possible gridlock on other bridges and roads. Crews won't be able to fix the crack that was discovered in the span Saturday in time for the bridge's scheduled reopening at 5 a.m. Tuesday, said Randy Iwasaki, director of the California Department of Transportation.

Fans hoping to root the San Francisco Giants on to victory on Labor Day first had to hope for another miracle, a second ferry from Oakland. KRON 4's Dave Guingona spotted a long line of fans at Oakland's Jack London square hoping to take a ferry to the ball game since the Bay Bridge remains closed.  The first ferry filled quickly leaving more fans waiting.

California Highway Patrol officers are urging you to take time during your holiday today to plan for how you're going to get to work or school tomorrow if the Bay Bridge remains closed.  Caltrans isn't giving an estimate now on when it will be able to re-open the bridge because of an unexpected crack in the eyebar on the eastern span.

We could know by late this afternoon when the Bay Bridge will re-open to traffic.  Caltrans officials say they will have a better idea about when the work on the span will be complete at a 5:00 p.m. news conference.  You can watch a live stream of that event on KRON4.com

The 73-year-old bridge that carries commuters between San Francisco and the heavily populated cities to its east could remain closed for a fifth day as crews race to repair a crack in a steel link that holds up part of the span, a state transportation official said Sunday. A team of workers received the blueprint and materials they needed to repair the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which carries about 260,000 vehicles a day. But fixing the problem by Tuesday, when the workweek begins and the bridge had been set to reopen, poses "quite a challenge," said CalTrans spokesman Bart Ney.

Bay Area transit agencies are adding service to help  accommodate travelers between the East Bay and San Francisco during this  weekend's closure of the Bay Bridge for seismic retrofit work. The bridge will close beginning Thursday at 8 p.m. and will remain  closed until 5 a.m. Tuesday, during which time crews will replace a  300-foot-long section of the eastern span of the bridge.

Bay Area transit representatives and commuters reported normal  trips Friday morning despite the temporary closure of the San Francisco-Oakland  Bay Bridge. The Bay Bridge closed for seismic retrofit work Thursday night,  and is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday.
