Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes Fremont

FREMONT (KRON) -- A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck Fremont this morning at 2:41 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake happened along the Hayward fault, which has been dormant since its last quake in 1868, according to the USGS.

"The glasses in the kitchen started clattering which woke me up," said Elsi Wu, a visitor in San Francisco. "It was terrifying" she said.

According to Belmont resident Laurel Tremaine, the shaking lasted about five seconds.

So far no damage or injuries have been reported in the quake.

After the initial quake shook Fremont, 12 aftershocks have been felt throughout the Bay area.  That number seems to be growing.

The quake was felt as north as Benecia and as south as Santa Cruz including over 250 zip codes, according to the USGS.

One of this morning's most felt aftershocks was a magnitude 2.6 quake that hit 3 kilometers North East of Fremont around 3 a.m.

The 2003 Working Group for California Earthquake Probability assigned a 27% probability that the Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault system would produce a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years.
