OAKLAND (KRON) -- One person is dead after a hit-and-run early Monday morning in Oakland, according to police.
Officers were dispatched at 12:48 a.m. to the area of International Boulevard and 82nd Avenue, near the Walgreens store at 8102 International Blvd., on a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they learned that a black Dodge Charger and a maroon BMW 320 were traveling eastbound on International Blvd at a high rate of speed, according to police.
Police said it appears that the vehicles may have been street racing when the Dodge Charger lost control and struck a pedestrian who was on the north side of the street.
The Oakland Fire Department and an ambulance service arrived at the scene and provided medical treatment to the pedestrian.
The pedestrian, a 49-year-old non-Oakland resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver of the Dodge Charger fled the scene.
The BMW became disabled and the driver and possible occupants abandoned the car and also fled the scene, police said.
