Police respond to shooting near Toys R Us in South San Jose

UPDATE 6:11 P.M.: A man in a stolen SUV who police shot at as he sped away, hitting and injuring other drivers and ramming a police patrol car, was quickly arrested after he fled into a San Jose Toys R Us store Tuesday afternoon, police said.

There were injuries to the occupants of the other cars, but police Officer Albert Morales did not immediately say how many people were injured or the extent of their injuries. No police officers were injured.

Christina, a friend of the Suburban owner who declined to give her last name, said the SUV was stolen from outside the Pump It Up amusement center at 1830 Hillsdale Ave. at about noon.

The Suburban owner used a tracking app on an iPad left in the back of the vehicle to track it to Thornwood and Winfield, where her boyfriend called police, according to Christina.

As of about 5 p.m., the entrance to Toys R Us remained taped off, with store employees sitting around outside waiting and a damaged Chevrolet Suburban with four bullet holes in the driver's side door parked outside the store entrance.

While the Toys R Us remains closed, neighboring stores in Almaden Square are open for business, including Cost Plus World Market, Comerica Bank and Mancini's Sleepworld.

SAN JOSE (KRON) - Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened near a popular toy store in the South Bay around noon Tuesday.

The incident began at about 12:50 p.m. when San Jose police officers responded to Thornwood Way and Winfield Boulevard after a victim reported seeing a person driving his stolen vehicle in the area.

The victim tracked down the family's SUV through a tracking app installed on an iPad that was left inside the vehicle.

Responding officers spotted the stolen vehicle being driven in the area of Blossom Hill Road near Almaden Expressway.

As officers tried to stop the car, the suspect sped off ramming the stolen SUV into other occupied vehicles, including a police car.

"Shots were fired in the direction of the suspect vehicle," police said.

According to a witness at nearby sports store, the driver of the dark-colored SUV led police on a chase through the Almaden Square Shopping Center parking lot, parked the vehicle in front of Toys R Us and ran into the toy store.

Moments later, officers swarmed the Toys R Us store located at 1 Blossom Hill Road.

Another witness who asked to remain anonymous was shopping for toys when the suspect charged into the store.  The witness said that the suspect was taken into custody inside the store.

The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to his side, the witness said. Police have not confirmed the suspect's injuries.
