We’ve been honoring outstanding teachers in the Bay Area.
Tonight it’s a kindergarten teacher described as an amazing advocate and collaborator.
Maria Leyson teaches at Marshall Elementary in Castro Valley.
Aside from teaching 5-year-olds basic academics, her principal says Maria mentors students and parents who are learning English.
She says she has a passion for working with immigrant families, and showing them how to succeed in the American school system.
Maria says she knows that changing the course of a child’s future begins with being literate.
Her parents say that when she was the same age as her students, 5-years-old, she was already declaring she wanted to be a teacher.
