Bay Area firefighters burned while helping battle Carr Fire in Shasta Co.

The Marin County Fire Department says three of their firefighters were burned while helping battle the Carr Fire in Shasta County.

Cal Fire reported that three firefighters were injured Thursday night.

Today Marin County FD identified these men as:

  • 37-year-old Engineer Scott Pederson (19 years w/ the department)
  • 34-year-old Firefighter Tyler Barnes (4 years w/ the department)
  • 26-year-old Firefighter Brian Cardoza ( 3 years w/ the department)

All three were assigned to structure defense when they were hit with a blast of heat. The blast came from flames next to a building they were protecting, the fire department said.

They were all taken to Mercy Hospital in Redding where they were evaluated for burns to the ears, face, and hands. They were all released. 

One of the firefighters is being evaluated further today at UC Davis Burn Center.

Two other firefighters were killed battling the same fire.

Statement from Fire Chief Jason Weber:

“At this time we are focusing on the health of our firefighters and ensuring peer support is in place for the members of the strike team. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the two firefighters that lost their lives yesterday battling the same fire.”
