(KRON) — Two people were killed and another remains in critical condition after a crash in San Mateo County on Tuesday evening, California Highway Patrol’s Redwood City division confirmed.

The crash was a head-on collision involving a Tesla, traveling southbound, and a Subaru SUV, traveling northbound, on Highway 1 at Bean Hollow Road near the town of Pescadero, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said. Preliminary information indicates one of the vehicles crossed over into the opposing traffic for unknown reasons and sideswiped the other vehicle.

Both drivers lost control of their vehicles and veered off into the east side of the roadway and down into an embankment where both cars submerged in a lagoon, CHP said. The crash was called in to police at about 6:40 p.m.

The Tesla was completely submerged in the water while the Subaru was partially submerged, CHP said. Rescue teams from multiple agencies were deployed at about 7:30 p.m. to rescue the occupants from both vehicles at the lagoon.

The two male drivers were declared deceased at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries. A woman in her sixties, who was a passenger in the Subaru, was airlifted to Stanford Hospital with major injuries and remains in critical condition, CHP said.

Highway 1 was shut down in both directions due to the wreck.
