CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (KRON) — Eight are injured after a car crashed into a Trader Joe’s in Castro Valley Thursday afternoon, California Highway Patrol confirmed to KRON4. Four people, including a five-year-old, were hospitalized.
CHP said a silver Toyota Avalon drove through the entrance of the store and ended up at the checkout lanes. The store is located at 22224 Redwood Road.
Not all of those injured were hit by the car — some were hit by debris. One of those injured was an employe of the store, KRON4 confirmed. CHP described the injuries as “mild to moderate.”
The 88-year-old male driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities, CHP said. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but drugs or alcohol are not expected to be factors, police told KRON4.
The Alameda County Fire Department responded to the crash and shared pictures from the scene (below).
