Actor Danny Glover says farewell to SF's Lucca Ravioli Co. on last day open

San Francisco’s beloved Italian restaurant and deli Lucca Ravioli Company has officially closed after 94 years in the city’s Mission District.

Lucca Ravioli Company has been at the corner of Valencia and 22nd streets since 1925, serving up varieties of meats, cheeses and homemade pastas to patrons for nearly a century.

One customer called the deli an institution.

“It’s part of our history, growing up in the city,” she said. “This place is an institution. It seems like it’s sad — one after another keeps closing, I guess it’s for the new generation, but it’s sad for them.”

Actor and San Francisco native Danny Glover was among those saying goodbye to the Lucca’s Tuesday.

“I’m glad that a friend told me it was closing down,” Glover said. “I just happened to be in town. If I had tried to come here next week, it [would be] gone. It’s an institution.”

He was even wearing a Lucca Ravioli t-shirt.

“It came as a shock,” Glover said about the news that it was closing. “I come here all the time, I get my pesto here.”
