College student wins $1M lottery prize in South Bay

MORGAN HILL (KRON)- - A 19-year-old college student is a $1 million richer after purchasing a winning lottery ticket.

Giovanni Escamilla purchased the winning California Black Premium scratcher from a gas station in Morgan Hill.

Initially, Escamilla and his father went inside Cochrane Food Mart & Carwash to grab a drink but decided to buy some scratchers while they were at it.

He wasn't sure he won until he scanned the ticket with his cellphone using a feature on the California Lottery's mobile app.

Escamilla told lottery officials, he was shocked when it read, "You're a winner! You have won $1,000,000.

He claimed his prize alongside his father.

Escamilla plans to invest his money in hopes of making more cash.
