CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (KRON) — Living in the Bay Area nowadays is expensive enough — but adding in the cost of attending college can create even more of a struggle for young people.
One East Bay community college is aiming to make the financial burden of higher education a little bit easier with free tuition for every first time, full-time college student, regardless of household income level.
The free tuition program is part of Diablo Valley College’s “First Time + Full Time = Free Tuition” program, which was introduced in the fall of 2018 under a statewide initiative passed under former Gov. Jerry Brown.
As the school year winds down, the enrollment period for the free tuition program at DVC is open for the fall 2019 semester.
Students simply fill out an online enrollment form as well as a FAFSA application and enroll in a minimum of 12 units per semester. There is no income requirement for applicants.
The program is open to full time, first time college students who are residents of California and covers the $46 per unit cost.
