East Bay family looking for answers after deadly Highway 4 shooting

Bay Area

ANTIOCH (KRON) — “We don’t know what to do, how to feel. Everyone asks how do you feel — you don’t know how to feel,” said Fred Hillery, the father of 25-year-old Destinee Hillery.

Fred Hillery hasn’t slept much since he received the call.

“I have no clue why this would happen, you see it all the time and you never think it’s going to hit home,” he said.

His daughter Destinee turned 25 just a few weeks ago.

She was on her way home from work Saturday when her life was taken on Highway 4.

Her car had crashed into a guardrail and police say there were bullet holes in the side of the vehicle.

“Nobody can believe it, nobody,” he said. “Who does that? [In] broad daylight, 2:30 in the afternoon, just sad, sad”

Hillery says his daughter was a constant joy to be around.

“Everybody likes Destinee,” Hillery said. “She’s just the most bubbly, energetic, outgoing personality you’ll ever meet. The person or whoever that did this not only took away something from me and her mom, they took away a favorite cousin. There’s just a lot of unanswered questions for me.”

Destinee’s cousin Cherysh Thames says she lost her best friend.

“We were a year a part. It’s just like why, you know? Why would anyone do this,” she said.

That’s what CHP is hoping to find out too.

When KRON4 last spoke with the agency, they said there could be a possible gang affiliation, but the family says absolutely not.

“We’re not even in that realm, not that type of crowd, it’s senseless that anything like that would come out,” her father said.

While they can’t get Destinee’s bright light back, they’re hoping someone will come forward with answers.

“If anybody knows anything or think you saw anything, it could help us bring closure to find out who would’ve done this and bring justice for Destinee,” her father said.

There was some initial confusion over whether or not Destinee was killed by the car crash or by the shots that were fired, but her father says police have told him she was in fact hit by gunfire.

The family has not picked any funeral or memorial dates just yet, they’re just trying to take this all day by day.
