Today Oakland educators, parents, and community members will rally at Lake Merritt Amphitheater and march to the offices of the Oakland Unified School District.

The goal of the rally is to highlight that Oakland educators have been working without a contract since July of 2017. Because of that, the Oakland Unified School District is losing educators.

Keith Brown is with the Oakland Education Association. Today he joined KRON4’s James Fletcher for a live Skype interview on-air to talk more about the rally.

“We really need to invest in our teachers because we are the ones that know what our students need to be successful,” he said.

Brown says the district admits they have over $20 million in additional funding coming in next year and none of it is going to teacher salaries, which would ultimately help keep teachers in Oakland.

Some of the best teachers are leaving to other districts because they can’t afford the cost of living, Brown tells KRON4.

The rally is at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon at Lake Merritt Ampitheater. Brown says this is a community event, and anyone is welcome to join.
