Memorial Day weekend: This is the worst time to drive in the Bay Area

Friday is one of the busiest travel days of the year ahead of the long holiday weekend. 

According to TripAdvisor, 36% of 3,500 people surveyed in the U.S. will be traveling to their destination today. 

According to AAA, about 43 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend.

However, more people will be staying closer to home this year, with only 19% of people planning to drive 100 miles or less this weekend. 

When will be the worst time to drive this Memorial Day weekend? 

According to INRIX, the late afternoon and evening of Friday, May 24 will likely be the worst times to travel as commuters heading home and holiday travelers fill the roads. 

In San Francisco, drivers can expect to see the worst traffic on Saturday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

25% of people plan to fly, with air travel predicted to increase by 3% this weekend. 

Memorial Day travel overall is up by 6% this year, with roads being the most traveled versus the friendly skies or rail.
