OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – The Oakland Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in Chinatown on Monday.
Police say one man was shot and killed around 2:12 p.m. in the 400 block of 8th Street.
Video shows several shell casings on the ground following the shooting.
Officers were able to hear the gunshots from the police department which is about a block away from the scene.
“Unfortunately, it was an incident that occurred about 2:12 this afternoon. There was a series of gunshots that could be heard from the police department. Officers rushed out to the scene and unfortunately we did find an adult male suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. We immediately called for medical assistance to render aid, I believe officers on scene were trying to render aid even before medical arrived but unfortunately, the person did succumb to their injuries,” Chief LeRonne Armstrong said.
Authorities say it was about 20 rounds from either a high-powered gun or multiple shooters were involved.
This marks the 54th homicide in Oakland this year, which is more than double to this time last year.
It remains unclear who the suspects are or what led up to the shooting.
