The Oakland teachers union has announced on Saturday afternoon that all 3,000 members will begin a strike on Thursday, Feb. 21.
The union will be fighting for the quality of schools that the students of Oakland deserve.
In a statement released by the President of the Oakland Education Association, Keith Brown said:
“Bargaining with the district has no — in two years — produced an agreement that will pay teachers enough to allow them to stay in Oakland, or make class sizes more conducive to teaching and learning, or provide our students with the supports they need to thrive. The only option that Oakland teachers, parents and students have left to win the schools Oakland students truly deserve, and to take control of our school district back from the control of billionaire campaign donors, is for the 3,000 members of the Oakland Education Association to go on strike.”
The union has been negotiating with the Oakland Unified School District for more than a year and a half contracts and better pay. They want smaller class sizes, more counselors full-time nurses, and a 12-percent raise over three years.
At this time, the district has offered 5-percent.
This strike announcement comes just one day after the sides received compromise recommendations in a fact-finding report.
OEA President Brown says the teachers will strike unless the district dramatically changes its spending approach.
John Sasaki, a spokesman for the school district, said all Oakland schools will remain open during the strike.
