SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — Police are responding to a shooting in San Jose Thursday afternoon.

One person who had life-threatening injuries when officers responded later died at the scene.

The shooting was reported in the area of N San Pedro and Hedding Street.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area as street closures are in place.

Authorities say they will release more information at a later time.

The shooting occurred about one minute away from the VTA rail yard facility, where a mass shooting took place a little more than a week ago claiming the lives of nine employees.

Sen. Dave Cortese released a statement on Thursday’s shooting that happened near the rail yard.

With our community still reeling from last week’s horrific shooting, we are experiencing shock and profound heartbreak once again. Another violent shooting has occurred today right in our County Civic Center a block away from last week’s tragedy. Thank you once again to our first responders that rushed to the scene.

This is only another indication that meaningful steps need to be made to strengthen and expand California’s laws to prevent this kind of violence and I am committed to taking any action needed to safeguard our community. This can’t continue to happen.”
