An incident at a family barbecue at Lake Merritt in Oakland, and a woman calling the police because the location of the barbecue was against park rules, has got everybody talking.
That Includes Oakland city leaders who are discussing potential solutions to prevent something like this from happening again.
“I think we have to be careful about what kind of rules and laws we put in place in the first place because it was the extra rules that are causing these problems,” said Michelle Snider, who recorded the cellphone video.
Snider’s husband and his close friends were the ones barbecuing at the lake back on Apr. 29 when the confrontation occurred.
Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan says the incident also showed the need for a solution that does not involve law enforcement.
“I think there should be other people that you can call instead of armed police,” Kaplan said.
