A San Anselmo teen suffered a terrible injury a few weeks ago, resulting in him severing his right hand. 

The accident happened at a construction site in the North Bay while Luke O’Heidhin was on spring break.

O’Heidhin’s aunt, Caroline Hynes-Marino says his younger brother Kyle, bravely tried to help that day, but to no avail. 

Microsurgeons at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco performed reconstructive surgery on his hand shortly after. 

It was severed at the wrist. 

“There is some wrist movement, but right now, but going forward, he’s gonna need physical therapy,” Hynes-Marino said. “There’s gonna be other kinds of medical expenses, and the biggest thing is going to be the prosthetic, and the prosthetics can range up to $200,000 and above for a good prosthetics.”

She started a GoFundMe campaign for her nephew Monday night and in less than a week more than $143,000 has been raised with contributions coming in from O’Heidhin’s family and friends in Ireland and all over the U.S. 

“This community is amazing,” Hynes-Marino said “From $5 from people to up to $10,000. It doesn’t matter how much. It’s just the fact that there’s human nature is so good.”

He is a senior at Sir Francis Drake High School where he is a member of the varsity track and soccer teams. 

He also maintains a 4.0 GPA.

O’ Heidhin’s family is so grateful that he is still alive and believes his strength will get him through this challenging time. 

“I haven’t seen him cry. He just wants to get on with it,” his aunt said. “…He’s keeping everybody strong, to be honest.”
