UC Berkeley says conservative activist attacked on campus, suspect not students

BERKELEY (KRON) - The University of California, Berkeley released new information on an assault that happened on campus in February.

According to the university, on Feb. 19 dozens of student groups— representing a full array of beliefs, interests, and ideologies, engaged in advocacy and outreach, were gathered at Sproul Plaza.

Authorities say, a man who's not a student at the university, passed through the open marketplace and got into an altercation with Hayden Williams, a representative of the Leadership Institute, which is a program that partners with the conservation organization, Turning Point USA.

On Friday, officers arrested Zachary Green who was caught on camera punching Williams in the face.

Witnesses say the victim was out protesting Jussie Smollet who's accused of staging a hate crime.

UC Berkeley says neither Willaims or Green are affiliated with the university.
