A woman says she was attacked by a bicyclist on Thursday in Novato while on a hike with her dog.

It happened around 10:00 a.m. in the Mount Burdell Open Space.

According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the bicyclist started yelling at the woman and her off-leash dog after it started barking at him.

The woman claims the suspect got off his bike and began kicking her dog. She intervened and tried to stop the attack by pushing the man away from her dog.

That’s when the suspect allegedly knocked her to the ground and choked her.

He fled the scene in a van and left his bicycle and personal items behind.

The victim and dog didn’t sustain any injuries.

Deputies located the suspect, 63-year-old Jeffrey W. Skelton, on Friday. Skelton claims the victim attacked him.

He was booked into Marin County Jail for assault likely to produce great bodily injury, cruelty to an animal, and violation of probation.
