ROHNERT PARK (KRON) — A homicide investigation is underway Friday after a missing 18-year-old man’s body was found in a shallow grave on the campus of Sonoma State Unversity, according to police.

A school groundskeeper found the body of Kirk Kimberly, of Cotati, on Wednesday at around 12:05 p.m. in a wooded area of campus west of parking lot M.

Kimberly has been missing since Oct. 17. He graduated from Rancho Cotate High School in May.

Investigators unearthed the body on Thursday after hours of sifting through the soil around the crime scene for evidence.

The remains were “in the form of a body and are no just bones,” Sgt. Spencer Crum said.

Police say the body had not been there long due to the amount of deterioration.

Anyone with information that might assist with the investigation is urged to call the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department at (707) 565-2121, or SSU Police and Safety Services at (707) 664-4444.Stay with KRON4 News for updates on this developing story
