SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A signature San Francisco sound filled Union Square Thursday when the 52nd Cable Car Bell Ringing contest pitted past winners competing for the title.
For the first time in contest history, the votes of a distinguished panel of judges, including KRON 4’s Stanley Roberts, ended in a tie. It resulted in a playoff between two veteran ringers.
Byron Cobb finally claimed the trophy. Cobb said his successful playoff ring was inspired by the band Steely Dan.
The winners received a trophy and cash prizes, according to the SFMTA.
