Early warning earthquake app released in Los Angeles

(KRON) — To those living in the Bay Area, this is the earthquake capital of California, but it’s Los Angeles that’s the first to get an earthquake early warning app.

“Basically will alert city dwellers those who live in the area of earthquake with early warning messages,” said Robert Degroot, a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Shake Alert L.A app can be downloaded on phones in the Los Angeles Area. It was developed by the city of Los Angeles and AT&T.

The farther you are from the epicenter, the more time you’ll have to prepare.

“The whole idea here is to provide people with the opportunity to take some sort of protective action when they get the alert on their phones,” said Degroot.

UC Berkeley says its also working on an early warning app of its own called ‘My Shake.’

It has not yet been deployed.
