Firefighter assigned to Carr Fire in Shasta County killed in traffic accident

SHASTA COUNTY (KRON) - Another firefighter was killed battling a massive wildfire in Shasta County, officials announced Thursday morning.

"We are saddened to report the death of a CAL FIRE heavy Equipment Mechanic from the Butte County Unit assigned to the Carr Fire. He was killed early this morning as the result of a traffic accident on Highway 99 in Tehama County."

It is unclear if the crash was directly fire-related.

The Carr fire has already claimed six lives, including two other firefighters. 

The blaze is now 177,450 acres and 48% contained.
