SACRAMENTO (KTXL) — Sacramento police are continuing to investigate what led to one of their officers hitting a 16-year-old boy with his SUV.
The accident happened late Sunday night on Eleanor Avenue near Rio Linda Boulevard and El Camino Avenue.
According to police, officers tried to stop the teen for a bicycle code violation but he ran away. Police said the teen was being stopped because of a lighting violation on his bike.
“When the officer went to contact the suspect, the suspect broke free and fled from the officers,” said Detective Eddie Macaulay with the Sacramento Police Department. “The officers radioed that they were in foot pursuit of the suspect. Additional responding officers responded and that’s when one of the additional responding patrol cars and the suspect made contact.”
The patrol SUV hit the 16-year-old and the vehicle ended up in the front yard of a home in the neighborhood.
“I flew at least 10 to 15 feet,” said Daniel, the boy who was hit. “I ain’t going to lie to you, it’s crazy.”
Neighbors came out of their homes and appeared to be outraged by what happened.
Investigators say they will be reviewing any available dashcam or body camera video. However, because it is evidence, it may not be released to the public.
The teen was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. He returned home from the hospital a short time later.
“It’s just crazy. It happened so fast,” Daniel told KTXL. “It’s a blessing to be standing. It’s a blessing to be thinking, seeing. It’s a blessing to do all that right now.”
Daniel’s family says they plan to take legal action and they refused to let him answer questions about what happened.
“I just want to thank all the supporters,” Daniel said. “I seen everybody out here supporting me. It’s a blessing to see that, it’s a blessing.”
Neighbors in the area have said there was a second victim, a woman they claim was hit by debris. Police told KTXL they are investigating that but so far cannot confirm that she was injured from this accident.
