Davis police officer in "serious condition" after shooting, manhunt underway for suspect

DAVIS (KRON) – Authorities are searching for a suspect who shot a Davis police officer after a traffic collision Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. near 5th and D streets in Downtown Davis, according to police.

Police say the female officer was responding to a triple-car crash in the area — and for an unknown reason, shots were fired.

The injured officer is in “serious condition,” according to the latest update from Lt. Paul Doroshov, with the Davis Police Department.

Police say an active manhunt it underway for the suspect, who’s described as a white man in his 20s, average build, wearing a baseball cap, black jacket, blue or tan jeans and black tactical boots.

Doroshov says the department has a lead on a possible suspect, but we’re unable to provide further details — calling the ordeal a “fluid, tactical situation.”

The shooting occurred not far from the UC Davis campus. The campus issued an alert to students just before 7:30 p.m., asking students to avoid downtown until further notice.

Lt. Doroshov says the Davis Police Department is small and like a family — so the department is shocked at what’s happened.

Residents in the area are currently under shelter in place orders.
