VALLEJO (KRON) — The lawyer for Vallejo kidnapping suspect Matthew Muller said his client suffers from bipolar disorder.
The attorney says he plans to use his client’s mental state as part of his defense. KRON 4’s Maureen Kelly talked to a criminal defense lawyer and former prosecutor.
He said the courts have set a high standard for defendants trying to use an insanity defense.
Legal expert Jim Hammer said Muller’s lawyer would have to clear a lot of hurdles to get his client a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.
The arrest warrant affidavit states that the former Marine told investigators that he suffers from Gulf War illness, had problems with psychosis, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008.
