Nate Thurmond Basketball Courts reopen in Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON)—Hundreds of people packed a popular San Francisco park for the reopening of a fallen NBA Hall-of-Famer’s basketball courts.

Warriors TV announcer Jim Barnet threw the first official basket at the newly refurbished Nate Thurmond Panhandle Basketball Courts in Golden Gate Park .

After 16 years, the courts had fallen into disrepair and Saturday the Warrior’s foundation and the Good Tidings foundation unveiled the sparkling new courts.

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown spoke of all the things Thurmond did for the city.

“He did so with the ultimate in being modest,” Brown said. “He visited school after school after school. Nate Thurmond never turned any request down for people who wanted his celebrity status to be what they were about. That’s why he is probably the most famous San Francisco athlete for San Franciscans.

The Warriors and Good Tidings foundations have refurbished more than sixty basketball courts in the bay area.
