Political leaders across the country responded to the news that special counsel Robert Mueller finished his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and turned over his final report to Attorney General William Barr.
Statement from Congresswoman Barbara Lee:
“The questions probed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller go to the very core of our democracy. The American people deserve to know whether foreign powers interfered in our elections – and whether there were illegal attempts to obstruct federal investigators from determining the answer. It is imperative that Attorney General Barr make the findings of Mueller’s investigation available to Congress and release them in full to the public.”
Statement from Congressman Mark DeSaulnier:
“The conclusion of the investigation is an important step, but there is still more left to come to light. The Attorney General must send the full report and the underlying documents to Congress expeditiously and abide by Congressional intent to make the report’s findings public. The American people deserve transparency and accountability.
Joint Statement from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer:
“Now that Special Counsel Mueller has submitted his report to the Attorney General, it is imperative for Mr. Barr to make the full report public and provide its underlying documentation and findings to Congress. Attorney General Barr must not give President Trump, his lawyers or his staff any ‘sneak preview’ of Special Counsel Mueller’s findings or evidence, and the White House must not be allowed to interfere in decisions about what parts of those findings or evidence are made public.
“The Special Counsel’s investigation focused on questions that go to the integrity of our democracy itself: whether foreign powers corruptly interfered in our elections, and whether unlawful means were used to hinder that investigation. The American people have a right to the truth. The watchword is transparency.”
Representative Anna G. Eshoo:
“Now that Special Counsel Mueller has delivered his report to the Department of Justice, Attorney General Barr must release the full report to the public and make available all documentation and evidence to the appropriate Congressional committees. The White House must not have access to the report before the American people, and any effort by the Administration to interfere with the report’s release is unacceptable.
“The American people deserve to know the facts about the Russian attack on our democracy during the 2016 election. Questions of grave concern are at stake, and the country has a right to the full truth.”
Senator Kamala D. Harris:
“We need total transparency here. The Department of Justice launched the Special Counsel investigation to get to the bottom of foreign interference in the 2016 election and any other illegal actions. A declassified report must be made public immediately and Attorney General Barr must publicly testify under oath about the investigation and its findings, and provide all underlying materials to the appropriate Congressional committees.
“This is about securing American democracy and protecting voters’ confidence in our elections and our system of government.”
Representative Eric Swalwell:
“Congress and the American public must see every single word of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. And we should see it at the same time as President Trump, a subject of the investigation, sees it. Nothing less than the rule of law in our country is on the line. Congress must also hear from Mueller himself to make sure that we have received the whole, unvarnished truth. No President is above the law.”
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra:
“Special Counsel Mueller’s investigative report examines questions intrinsic to our democracy. These findings are too important to be kept hidden from our citizens and taxpayers. Attorney General Barr, do the right thing. Make the report public.
