Police investigating possible child abuse captured on camera

A shocking video of child abuse was posted on social media and now New York State Police are investigating.

WTEN is keeping the identities anonymous to protect the child.

Family members of this young child are wondering why it wasn’t Child Protective Services who called police but us.

It’s disturbing to watch and unsettling to learn the man on your screen is the child’s father.

The video was posted on Facebook then recently taken down.

Family members say it isn’t the first time the child suffered abuse at the hands of her father. They showed the video to Child Protective Services but the first time it crossed the desk of a State Police investigator is when WTEN brought it to their attention.

It’s raising some serious questions about the agency meant to protect young children.

The child is safe with her mom but her mother was afraid that calling police meant losing her child.

She felt helpless and so did her little girl.

“You can see her go rigid. She’s got a panic response that’s going on for her,” Timothy Hathaway, Executive Director at Prevent Child Abuse New York, said.

He says many cases go unreported because parents are afraid of the consequences.

“We want to get help for those people. The idea of just letting them somehow suffer through it or think well maybe it will get better if we leave it alone, that’s maybe the worst thing we could do.”

Law enforcement sources say CPS should have notified police but they didn’t.

“Communities can take this issue on and they can change the trajectory around this.”

Now, this case is the subject of a criminal investigation.

There are a number of different resources for families who are hesitating to contact CPS or police by visiting the Prevent Child Abuse NY website or calling 1-800-CHILDREN.
