WATCH! Family frees whale shark shackled by heavy rope

HONOLULU (KRON) - A family in Hawaii freed a whale shark from a giant rope that was digging into its fins.

The family was diving when they noticed the entangled whale shark swimming right next to them.

The mom and dad happen to be biologists, and decided to take on the responsibility of cutting the animal loose.

They say it took five dives and a four-inch knife to get all the way through the rope, which was about five inches thick and weighed as much as 150 pounds.

Experts say the situation could have been life-threatening if shackled in the net for too long.

Once free, the whale shark swam off and the family pulled the rope to shore.
